Hiroshima

February 2007

During the long weekend for the Foundation of Japan all the Aussies went to Hiroshima. We left early on Saturday morning and went by shinkansen. We went to the peace memorial park, children’s memorial, the A-bomb dome and the Peace museum. It was a long day which was quite emotional. The museum was full of so much information, much which was quite disturbing. There were remnants of clothing, children’s lunch boxes still with charcoal remains and a watch that stopped at the exact time that the bomb hit. At the same time Hiroshima is such a beautiful place and it is amazing how it has all been rebuilt in just over 50 years. Paper cranes are put at all the memorials and are still being sent today from all over the world. I bought the book “Sadako and the 1000 paper cranes”, in Japanese and English. We also visited the castle and the miniature gardens. It is an amazing place and I would definitely visit it again.

Shinkansen!

Children's memorial - Sadako's memorial.

Paper cranes at the memorial for the girls high school.

Memorial to the victims - there is an eternal flame burning which will only be extinguished when there is no longer nuclear weapons in the world.

A-bomb dome that is still standing even though it was very close to the hypercentre.
