A night out in Osaka!

April 2007

Well we finally got to go dancing in Osaka! Marie, Tina and I along with Lexi (an American girl who lives in our apartment) caught a train to Osaka in the afternoon. We met Marie’s friend Megumi who took us to an Australian CafĂ© of all places! I was hoping it wouldn’t be tacky but it was really nicely designed and had a great selection on the menu of Australian and Japanese foods. Megumi had said they had meat pies but sadly she was wrong. (I don’t eat meat pies but I have been really wanting one for a while now!!) We then checked into our hotel and prepared for a night out! We found a really cool sushi train restaurant where every plate was ¥130 (about $1.30) and then Lexi took us to a host bar!!! For those who don’t know what a host bar is it is where you go to talk to Japanese boys while they get you drinks and make you feel good about yourself!! It was quite an experience! We caught the lift up to the 6th floor and found ourselves at a desk but no doors. Suddenly the wall slid open to reveal a mirrored hallway, at this point I was a little worried of how we would get out if we wanted to!!! We then entered the club and guys yelled out “irrashaimase” (welcome) and we were seated together with about 3 guys. We could stay for one hour and drink as much as we liked for about ¥2000 ($20) as it was our first visit, this price also included drinks for them as apparently that is what you do! There were a couple of guys who spoke quite good English and told us we were the first foreign girls to ever come to their bar! It was lucky for us that they could speak some English and Lexi is good at speaking Japanese but it was quite embarrassing! Looking around the club there were a few girls who definitely wouldn’t find it hard to find guys to talk to but there was one girl who was a little sad as she was chatting to a guy with plates of food in front of her and hugging her Winnie the Pooh toy! When leaving the host bar the guys gave us their cards as a second visit would be different and we would choose just one guy to talk to. They escorted us out, carrying our handbags and then bowed in the street saying goodbye! This was definitely an experience I had to have but won’t need to do again!

Host guys outside trying to get customers, its very interesting to watch as some are trying to get customers and others are scouts trying to find new girls to work in host bars.

After leaving the host bar we wandered round for a while unsure of where we really wanted to go but ended up at a place called Cool Rock which had music which was good but there wasn’t a good feel to it so we had our drink that was included in our entry price and then left. We ended up at a club called Joule which was amazing – it's the only word to describe it! Everyone there was tanned, not just a little healthy tan but a really, really dark tan! Nearly the whole club was like this and as four of only a few foreigners we definitely stood out with our very white skin! The club was very cool and so were the people – I definitely want to go back there but will aim to get a little sun first (not too much though)!

How cute were those guys at the host bar? I want to go back, but maybe when I learn to speak more Japanese! That club was just amazing! I will definately have to go back there with you!
